Constitutional amendment wasn’t to remove rulers’ role, says Nazri
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 30 — The requirement for royal assent to pass Acts of Parliament was dropped in 1994 to facilitate the legislation of new laws and not to reduce the powers of the rulers, an Umno minister explained today.
Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said this had been the intent of the constitutional amendment then, adding that this has not changed over two decades later.
“Even until today, we can see how the smoothening has been proven. It has nothing to do with curtailing anyone’s powers, no.
“The purpose was only to smoothen the process” he told reporters after launching the Bermalam di Muzium 2016 programme at the National Museum.
He said the issue now was to ensure that any changes further improved the business of lawmaking as intended by the previous amendment.
Nazri added that other issues should not be considered in any review unless they were obstructing the legislative process.
